Modern Single-Ply Roof Waterproofing
TPO/FPO membrane is a single-ply synthetic flexible polyolefin membrane. It is commonly used where a lightweight, durable and reflective waterproofing system is required.
The Smart White finish offers a high solar reflective index of 102. As a result, it can reduce heat absorption on the roof surface and help keep the building interior cooler during warmer months. This is one reason TPO roofing membranes are popular for commercial buildings, apartments and low-slope roof areas.
What is a TPO Roofing Membrane?
TPO stands for Thermoplastic Polyolefin. It is a flexible synthetic roofing membrane designed to protect flat and low-slope roof areas from water ingress.
Unlike torch-on membranes, TPO does not require open flame installation. Instead, the sheets are laid across the roof surface and joined with heat-welded seams. Therefore, correct welding, detailing and preparation are critical to the long-term performance of the system.
- Single-ply synthetic roofing membrane
- Suitable for flat and low-slope roof areas
- Heat-welded seams for watertight protection
- Lightweight compared with some traditional systems
- Smart White surface for strong solar reflection
Where is TPO Membrane Used?
TPO membrane works well on many roof waterproofing projects. For example, it is often used on commercial roofs, residential flat roofs, gutters, parapets, balconies and decks.
Because it is lightweight and reflective, TPO can suit projects where the roof needs long-term waterproofing performance without adding unnecessary weight to the structure.
- Commercial flat roofs
- Residential low-slope roofs
- Apartment buildings
- Gutters and parapets
- Balconies and decks
- Roof extensions and roof replacements
How TPO Roof Membrane is Installed
Good TPO installation starts with a suitable substrate. Before installation, Elephant NZ checks the roof surface, falls, outlets, upstands, parapets and drainage details.
After preparation, the TPO sheets are positioned across the roof area. Then, the seams and details are heat-welded to create a continuous waterproofing system. Finally, the team checks high-risk areas such as corners, outlets, penetrations and junctions.
- Roof inspection and substrate preparation
- Membrane layout and sheet positioning
- Heat-welded seams and laps
- Detailing around outlets, upstands and penetrations
- Final inspection before handover
TPO Membrane vs Torch-On Membrane
TPO and torch-on membranes can both provide reliable roof waterproofing. However, the best option depends on the project design, substrate, access, exposure and specification.
TPO Membrane
A modern single-ply roof membrane with a reflective surface and heat-welded seams.
- No open flame installation
- Lightweight roof waterproofing system
- Smart White reflective finish
- Good option for flat and low-slope roofs
Torch-On Membrane
A proven bitumen-based membrane system that is commonly used on roofs, decks, balconies and podiums.
- Strong multi-layer membrane system
- Common for decks, roofs and podiums
- Suitable for many exposed waterproofing areas
- Requires specialist torch-on installation

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a TPO roof membrane?
TPO is a single-ply synthetic roof membrane used for flat and low-slope roof waterproofing. It is lightweight, flexible and joined with heat-welded seams.
Is TPO suitable for commercial roofs?
Yes, TPO membrane is commonly used on commercial flat roofs, warehouses, apartment buildings and other low-slope roof areas.
Does TPO require open flame installation?
No, TPO installation does not require open flame like torch-on membrane. The seams are heat-welded using specialist equipment.
Why is TPO often white?
Many TPO systems use a Smart White finish to reflect heat and reduce roof surface temperature. This can help improve comfort and energy efficiency.
